Winter in California

I've been dreaming up some new inspirations for my Esty site. It's hard not to be enamored with the California coast during the winter. Soft colors, big waves, and beautiful solitude.

Big Sur on a Budget

Spencer and I are constant victims of the travel bug, unfortunately we are living on a very tight budget these days. So we've been making the most of our new home on the Northern California Coast. And lucky for us we have a lot of wonderful weekend get aways to choose from.
California is notorious for it's beautiful, yet expensive vacation spots. So now it's my mission to experience all that California has to offer on the tight budget of a twenty-something.

Starting in San Francisco we traveled south on historic California Highway 1 to camp at Andrew Molera State park, Big Sur, California

The campground at Andrew Molera Sate Park is a "walk-in" with 24 first-come, first-served campsites. There is a parking area at the entrance to the sea-side park where you can mark your chosen campsite on the map and "in good faith" leave your $25.00 a night camp-site payment. The campsites are about one-
third of a mile from the parking/staging area.

What's great about this place: if you're a camping enthusiast without a lot of wilderness experience, this is the place for you! It has all the beauty of true tent camping with all the perks of a "camp-site" i.e. short, very easy walk, no-frills bathrooms, bear boxes for your food, easily accessed very well maintained day hiking trails, and there is always someone on park staff camping at the site during season.
It's cheap! OK, so for $25.00 a night we obviously weren't experiencing anything close to even the base line Post Ranch experience at $550.00 a night. But we were in Big Sur, taking in all of its natural beauty and camping in a tent in November!! (As a born and raised Yankee, East Coaster, the weather out here still amazes me!)

If you do have a little disposable income... I strongly suggest sunset cocktails and gourmet burgers overlooking the coastline at Nepenthe. Some friends from Denver suggested this restaurant, and I don't take their word lightly when it comes to food... So $65.00 later, Spencer and I experienced two of the best burgers of our lives! We highly recommend the Ambrosia Burger.

While you're traveling in the area you might want to make a detour to Monterey. It's about an hour south of San Francisco and pretty close to Big Sur. Take stroll through the quaint little streets of downtown Monterey and check out the galleries. Make sure to grab a cup of coffee and a breakfast sandwich from Pino's Italian Cafe.

If you loving playing tourist like I do, then you have to spend some time on Cannery Row.
Take a few hours to check out the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Some notable sites at the aquarium are the shark tank, the jelly fish room, and the sea otters! For the photo enthusiast, this place is a dream come true!
So there it is, our little weekend getaway for under $500.00. Enjoy!

a new blog for a new year

Alright, so I now I'm a few months late on the whole new year thing... but hey, can't we all celebrate the refreshing perspective that the "new year" offers anytime we want?

So here's to the still fresh 2010!
